Beaches
Lake Michigan Beach

A favorite spot for residents and visitors. From here, you can see the lighthouse, the pier, the fish hatchery and the public beach. The beach is maintained by the City of Charlevoix, which furnishes a lifeguard and beach house for swimmers.

Depot Beach

This beach is located on Lake Charlevoix, directly across from the historic Depot. Lifeguards, playground equipment, restrooms, and volleyball court. A pavilion for picnicking are available.

Ferry Beach

Located on Lake Charlevoix. A concession stand, restrooms, abundant play equipment, volleyball court, lifeguards, and a pavilion.

East Jordan
Access locations at Old State Road, Webster’s Bridge and Roger’s Bridge. Canoeing is also popular on this river.

Lake Charlevoix

Charlevoix is one of the most favored ports on the Great Lakes. The City of Charlevoix owns and operates a yacht basin on Round Lake which has easy access to Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. Electrical and water hookups, showers, restrooms and pump out facilities are available. (231) 547-3272

Public Launch

A public boat launch, accessing Lake Charlevoix, with ramps and ample parking is located next to Ferry Beach, at the end of Stover Road off M-66. An additional ramp with parking accessing the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix is located in Ironton off M-66. There are two boat ramps with parking, accessing Lake Michigan, at the end of Lake Shore Drive near the St. Marys Cement Company on Lake Michigan, and on US-31 north of Lexalite.

Skiing
Mt. McSauba

The City of Charlevoix offers one of the few municipal ski facilities left in Michigan. Mt. McSauba is ranked as one of the top three small ski areas in the United States. It is located on McSauba Road only about a half mile from town, overlooking Lake Michigan. Mt. McSauba offers excellent family skiing, both downhill, and cross-country, snowboarding, snowblading, snowshoeing, and sledding. It is perfect for skiers of all abilities with five runs, four rope tows and lighted skiing. There’s also a free, lighted steep sledding hill. The longest run is 1,00 feet and the highest run elevation is 150 feet.

The groomed cross country trail is 2km long, flat ground to steep hills, free, and lighted at night. There are also approximately 80 acres of ungroomed trails that are not lit.

Many skiers find Charlevoix to be an ideal base for operations while choosing to ski Boyne Mountain, Nub's Nob, Boyne Highlands, as all the hills are almost equidistant from the city.

Fisherman's Island State Park

Fisherman's Island State Park offers lots of wide open space for skiers to blaze their own trail. Several miles of trails make winter nature observation a pleasant pursuit.

Young State Park

Young State Park is located at the east end of beautiful Lake Charlevoix. It has 2.2 miles of trails. The trailhead is located across the road from the park's headquarters off Boyne City Road.

Snowmobiling

Michigan is one of only three states that offer a large system of interconnected snowmobile trails. A unique combination of abundant snow, exciting terrain and an extensive trail network has made Michigan known to snowmobilers nationwide.

Be sure to ride the 19-mile snowmobile trail between Charlevoix and East Jordan. There’s a snow clubhouse located at M 32 and Mt. Bliss Road. The Charlevoix Snowmobile Trail connects with the Jordan River State Forest Trail and also connects with the Northern Michigan Snowmobile trail network. The city trail goes into downtown Charlevoix to East Park which provides access to the downtown businesses.

Michigan State Law requires all snowmobiles to be registered. A snowmobile owned by a non-resident must display a valid registration from their home state or province. or be registered in Michigan before it can be operated in Michigan.

Snowmobile trail permit stickers are available through the Department of Natural Resources on-line, or the Michigan Snowmobile Association.

Trails
Little Traverse Wheelway

The Wheelway is approximately 29 miles long from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs. The Trail is mostly "dedicated" and mostly asphalt.  It can be used for running, hiking, bicycling, in-line skating, but no snowmobiles or horses are permitted. It is currently the best developed of the trunk line trails. The trail begins at the intersection of Division and McSauba roads on Charlevoix's north side. Follow McSauba Road northeast to Waller Road. There is good parking at Shanahan Park about .5 miles from US 31 on Waller Road.

North Point Nature Preserve

Adjacent to Mt. McSauba recreation area, North Point Nature Preserve provides 27 acres of tranquility and diversity. The many trails which wind throughout the preserve offer opportunities to see successional stages of forest cover, 2800 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline and three threatened plant species: Pitcher's Thistle, Lake Huron Tansy, and Pumpell's Bromegrass.

Take Mercer Rd. north off US 31 to Pleasant St., turn left onto Mt. McSauba, turn right before the dirt road. The preserve is on the left.

Young State Park

There are five miles of nature trails that are perfect for hiking, jogging, and nature study. Bicycles may be ridden on park roads only.

Take US 31 north to Boyne City Road (County Road 56), turn right and continue to park entrance.

Fisherman's Island State Park

Several miles of trails make hiking and nature observation a pleasant pursuit.

Turn west onto Bells Bay Road off US 31 South.

Raven Ridge Preserve

The Raven Ridge Preserve offers a place of retreat and of learning. The 140 acres include a mix of open fields and wooded ridges. The property lies adjacent to the Raven Hill Discovery Center, an interactive museum, science, and technology center that is situated on an additional 157 acres.

Three looped trails travel up and down the hillside providing a total of more than 1 1/2 miles of hiking. A trail connects the preserve's main trail system to Raven Hill Discovery Center.

Sleepy Hollow Nature Preserve

The 55-acre Sleepy Hollow Nature Preserve has more than one mile of trail suitable for walking. A beautiful spring fed creek flows through the lowland and empties into the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix.

Take M-66 to Sleepy Hollow Lane, which is opposite Phelps Road. Turn left onto Sleepy Hollow Lane, a small parking area is about 1/8 mile on the left.

Charles A. Ransom Nature Preserve

The 80-acre preserve commands one of the most spectacular views in northern Michigan. From its highest elevation of 320 feet above Lake Michigan, viewers can see most of western Charlevoix County and a broad expanse of Lake Michigan on the horizon.

From Charlevoix take US 31 north to Burgess Road, turn right. Go 3 1/2 miles to Quarterline Road and turn left. Then go 1 mile to Maple Grove Road and turn left. The parking lot is about 3/4 mile down Maple Grove Road.
